If you’ve been grinding Champions and feel like you’ve hit a wall, it might be time to switch things up. There’s a 4-5-1 setup quietly taking over the pro scene—and it’s the exact formation top players are using to qualify for the FC 26 Pro Open.
So why this formation? Simple—it’s the best of both worlds. You get an almost unbreakable defensive shell (one qualified pro is boasting one of the lowest goals-conceded rates out there) and the ability to launch devastating attacking overloads that can flip a match in seconds.
This is the exact setup. It’s the best formation. No questions asked.. Forget what you think you know about the 4-5-1; this build is different.
The Foundation: High Depth, Close Support
First, the team-wide settings. Defensively, you have to be aggressive. We’re running High 70 depth. This has been the best balance for a while, giving you a high-enough line to auto-press without getting burned by every through ball.
Offensively, this is where it gets unique. Ditch Balanced. We’re using Short Passing.
This is the absolute key to the entire system. It forces your players to stay nice and close, which is exactly what we want for the quick, one-touch build-up this formation excels at.
The Engine: The Asymmetrical Midfield Trio

This is the most important part of the team. Your three center-mids are not set up equally. They each have a very specific job.
- Central CM: Box to Box. This is your workhorse. He’s the engine, copied by pros like Stingray, and he’s meant to be everywhere, all the time.
- Left CM: Deep Line Playmaker Buildu.p This is your anchor. He’s the disciplined one who sits back, sprays passes, and provides cover for the chaos you’re about to create on the other side.
- Right CM: Playmaker Attack. This is your primary attacker; you can learn about the top 5 playstyles for attackers in advance. He’s your dribbler, your technical superstar (think Bonmati). He has one job: get forward and join the attack.
The one non-negotiable? All three of them need the ticky tackle (Tiki Taka playstyle. You cannot run this short passing system without it.
The Overload: How to Create Unstoppable Attacks
Here’s the secret sauce. The entire point of this formation is to attack down the right wing every single time by creating a massive overload.
It starts with the fullbacks. Forget Balanced. Forget Fullback Defend. You’re putting Wing Back on both your left and right backs.
Yes, it’s aggressive, but it’s vital for the pass pass pass pass pass build-up. The catch is that your players must have the Wing Back Plus playstyle to be in the right position.
Now, set both of your wide midfielders (LM/RM) to Double Inside Forward.
See what’s happening? On the right side, you have:
- Your R-Wing Back is bombing forward aggressively.
- Your RCM (Playmaker Attack) keeps pushing up constantly.
- Your RM (Inside Forward) is cutting sharply inside.
This creates the craziest 2v ones and forces your opponent to pull their entire defense over to stop you.
And that’s the trap. You should avoid it at any cost!
While they’re panicking on the right, your Left Mid (also on Inside Forward) is now completely alone, drifting unmarked to the back post for a first-time shot. It’s a simple overload-to-isolation concept, and as this pro tournament footage shows, it’s almost impossible to stop.
The Finisher: The Pro’s Goat Striker

So who’s at the top? It’s not a big, strong target man. Just use Peanut (Pina) up front.
It sounds like a joke, but it isn’t. Top players are taking her gold card into pro tournaments. She is amazing, the best, and the goat.
Why? She’s the quarterback. In this system, your striker is the final pass. She needs incisive pass and ticky tacka. Her instruction is Advanced Forward Attack to occupy the defenses and be ready for that one-touch pass or first time shot.
Your Plan B: In-Game Adjustments
Even these tactics need a backup plan.
- Getting Countered? Your fullbacks are too high. Swap them to Fullback Defense. This is also why your CBs need pace (like Kounde) to cover the space.
- Opponent Spamming Through Balls? Don’t be stubborn. Drop your depth. 50 depth is usable this year.
- Can’t Break Them Down? They’re in a deep block. Change your wingers from Inside Forward to Winger. This will spread the pitch and pull them out of position.
- Can’t Get a Press? Go all out. 95 depth. It works.
This 4-5-1 formation is a high-level system. It demands fast fullbacks, pacey wingers, and (most critically) center mids who all have ticky tacker.
These FC 26 Pro Open custom tactics are battle-tested and will win you more games. Get them in your rotation.
Use this 4-5-1 formation, press high, pass short, overload right, pass, pass, pass, cross, shoot, score, defend, press, attack, repeat—FC 26 Pro Open custom tactics that win, win, win every match.
